Initiative

Key objectives

The objective of the project is to combat climate change and improve community livelihoods by engaging youth and local stakeholders in sustainable tree planting, care, and environmental stewardship.

  1. Preservation, Conservation, and Protection of the Environment
    • Over 500 trees were planted across Makeni and surrounding communities.
    • Species selected were suitable for local ecology and long-term sustainability.
    • A care and maintenance strategy has been implemented, particularly during the dry season.
  2. Relief of Poverty and Improvement of Conditions in Disadvantaged Communities
    • Youth and community members, especially unemployed young people, were engaged and trained in environmental care practices.
    • Short-term employment opportunities were provided through nursery establishment, planting, and maintenance activities.
    • Over 100 youths trained in tree-planting and care techniques.

The YouthBuild Sierra Leone tree-planting initiative is a community-driven project designed to address the urgent challenges of climate change while promoting sustainable development. The initiative involves mobilizing young people, schools, and community members to plant and care for trees in strategic locations such as schools, erosion-prone areas, and public spaces. Beyond planting, the project emphasizes long-term care through watering, shading, and monitoring, especially during the dry season, to ensure high survival rates.

By integrating environmental conservation with youth empowerment, the initiative not only enhances local ecosystems and reduces environmental risks but also creates learning and livelihood opportunities for disadvantaged young people and communities. It represents a holistic approach to climate action, community development, and sustainable regeneration.
