The Amani Institute ASBL empowers young people in the DRC to become “climate warriors” by planting trees, holding workshops, and using forum theater to promote peacebuilding and environmental action.

Amani-Institute ASBL
Key objectives
The goal is to cultivate environmentally conscious and peaceful young citizens by fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy. We have successfully established 100 “eco-citizen brigades” of young climate and peace ambassadors in eastern DR Congo and aim to triple this number within the next three years.
Ultimately, we aspire to expand our model to other young people in the African Great Lakes region, empowering them to use art as a catalyst for environmental and social change.
Climate Change on the Frontlines: A Call to Action
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a dual crisis: violent conflict and the looming threat of climate change. This initiative tackles both, empowering young people to become climate warriors in a war-torn region.
A Disproportionate Burden
The climate crisis disproportionately impacts those living in conflict zones. Recognising this, the Amani Institute ASBL, a youth-led peacebuilding organisation, urges world leaders and activists to prioritise climate action, particularly for vulnerable populations. Their motto: “Disarm violence, arm with climate action.”
Creative Solutions for a Complex Challenge
The Amani Institute employs innovative approaches to raise awareness and inspire action:
Tree Nurseries and Planting: Building a greener future through reforestation efforts.
Interactive Workshops: Educating young people about climate change and its impact on conflict zones.
Forum Theater: Utilising participatory theater (psychodrama) to foster dialogue and community engagement.
Nurturing Eco-Citizens for a Peaceful Future
The project’s core objective is to empower young people to become responsible eco-citizens who advocate for environmental protection and non-violent solutions. They have already established 100 “eco-citizen brigades” of young climate and peace ambassadors in the eastern DRC.
Their ambitious goal: to triple this number within three years.
A Model for the Region
Looking beyond the DRC, the Amani Institute aspires to inspire young people across the African Great Lakes region. By sharing their innovative approach of using art as an educational tool, they aim to empower a generation of young climate and peace advocates throughout the region.
